Item Types

The Library Catalogue contains books, spoken word (talking books) and language courses.

You can can tick any combination of boxes to find the type of item you want.

• If you search for "Books", large print books will be included in your search.
• If you only interested in large print books, tick the "Large print books only" box and the type of books you are looking for.

Keywords

Keywords have been assigned to each item, so that they can easily be searched for. There are four types of keywords: Author, Title, Publisher and Series.

• You can specify between one and five keywords in the appropriate boxes.
• The more keywords the narrower the search, but one wrong keyword will result in a nil return.
• It is better to enter one or two keywords that are likely to identify the item, than to try to enter the whole title.
• If you are not sure of the spelling of a word you can use the % wildcard.
• Series are not always catalogued and a search by Series keyword may not produce a list of books in the series.

Publication Date

You can search for items published in a range of years. This option will be useful if you interested in items published in the recent years.

Examples

• To search for the Harry Potter books, ensure the Adult fiction and/or Junior fiction are ticked, type HARRY POTTER in the Title keyword box, then click the Search button. This will find all the books with the words Harry and Potter in the title.
• To search for large print books by Catherine Cookson, ensure that Large print books only is ticked, and that the other types aren't ticked. Type CATHERINE COOKSON in the Author keyword box, then click the Search button.
• If you aren't sure of the spelling of a word, you can use the "wildcard" character, which is a percent (%) sign. The wildcard character represents any number of letters.
  For example, if you want to find books about cathedrals (the title might contain "cathedral" or cathedrals") ensure that a book type is ticked, type CATHEDRAL% in the Author keyword box, then click the Search button.
• To find books in the Rough Guide series, click Adult Non Fiction and enter ROUGH GUIDE in the Series Keyword box.
• To find books by Josephine Cox published this year or last year, tick the Adult Fiction box, enter COX in the Author keyword box, and enter last year and this year in the Year boxes. Note that this will included reprints of books.
